A vague memory

I still have the vague memory of going to the wet market with my mom when I was a child.

Those days supplies were not as abundant as they are today. Instead of giving out plastic bags, many vendors tied up the bunch of vegetables with a strand of straw. Sometimes they would wrap the vegetables in a piece of newspaper before fastening the straw. Even meat and fish were held with straw too. Air-conditioners were not common then. TV sets didn’t come with a remote control. You either turn it on or turn it off. There was no such thing as standby mode. Because things did not come easily, people were not given much room to waste electricity at the time of my childhood.

Then came the advances in technology and growth of economy. People were thrilled by the convenience brought by disposable items. They were so excited about the fancy electrical appliances or electronic gadgets emerged in the consumer market. Most importantly, they became richer and could afford a higher standard of and more wasteful living. Why keep that old stuff? Replace it ! Incinerators and rubissh dump sites started to operate at their full capacity. And nobody cared about the carrying capacity of the Earth.

Today’s people, our generation, are consuming even more resources than before. Even universities are following the wasteful practices of mainstream consumption behaviour. No, universities don’t lead, in whichever aspect, they just follow.

Forests are cleared, wastes build up, pollutants get into the air, soil and water…

We’re the first generation in history to consume natural resources at a rate that exceeds the earth’s regeneration capacity. And we are depriving the resources of the next generation.

This is so sad.

I am also feeling the pain myself.

Currently I am a software engineer in Silicon valley california , USA. I feel so bad that only a small group of people in San Francisco are “green”. People around me always change computer gears to catch up with the technology. I am trying to do the part myself, I am still using the old gears until the company force me to change it. Just like this week, my old phone is TDMA, and the signal is getting weaker, the company force me to get a new GSM (sim card) phone. People feel that I am stupid or weird …. however, I know all those old computer gears will be in China somewhere polluting the area ….

Talking about food, I feel so bad too …. Buffet, company dinner, company lunch, all are so wasteful. Food are untouched, and place in trash can. People want to get in shape, and don’t eat carbo, trays of fried rice, noodles are all wasted untouched. In buffet is even worst, people just take a lot and eat a bit then in the trash can again ….

Cars are controlled by the oil company, and all those cars like BMW, Mercedes are never environmental friendly …. and in silicon valley, most people if they can afford are driving brand name car, 18 miles/gallon, 20/miles/gallon … so wasteful.

I am still driving that old car, from 1995, giving me 32 miles/gallon because I am still waiting for a good hydrogen car, however, I don’t know when it can be there and approved by the govt.

The life in USA is so wasteful and hurting the environment …. similar to all those developed cities like Hong Kong.

All I can do is start from myself, I think you feel the same way.

Keep up the good work, at least I feel that someone in the other side of the world has some similar feeling, and I am not alone.

This year, I am starting an organic veggie growing area in my backyard, and I try to avoid dinning out …. but sometime, this is so tough since life with friends are different … and I cannot isolate myself that much in business and corporate world ….

Disposable planet

[source : BBC]

The more "developed" we get, the more we throw away.

The waste output of an average American has nearly doubled in the last 40 years.

All around the world, rubbish heaps are growing as countries industrialise.

And our hunger for the latest consumer items is leaving graveyards of complex and hazardous items such as computers and televisions.

Meanwhile, we are losing valuable raw materials to the scrap heap, and squandering energy on making new products.
